Encaustic 101: Layers, Translucency and Mark-making

In this hands-on demo, we will explore how paintings made with R&F Encaustic paint on Ampersand Encausticbords can be built from the ground up. With Encaustic, the layers harden quickly so the underlayers can remain intact to be excavated later. Images sandwiched between layers of clear medium seem to advance, recede and float in space. Emphasis will be placed on creating effects with fusing, the reheating process particular to this dynamic medium.
In addition to Encaustic, we will work with various compatible materials and techniques such as Pan Pastel, pencil, graphite, image transfers and R&F Pigment Sticks.
